on jan 10, the video conference on china-oman desertification prevention experience sharing took place, revealing ningxia's achievements in sand control over the years.
ningxia's desertified land is distributed across 16 counties in yinchuan, shizuishan, wuzhong, and zhongwei city, and is primarily concentrated by the tengger desert, the mu us desert, and the eastern part of the yellow river. according to the 6th desertification and desert monitoring in 2019, the total area of desertified land in ningxia was about one million hectares, accounting for 19.31% of the total land area of ningxia.
through a series of sand control actions, the desertified land area in ningxia has seen a continuous reduction for 25 consecutive years. forest coverage in the region has increased from 8.4 percent in 2000 to 15.8 percent in 2020, while the comprehensive vegetation coverage of grasslands has risen from 35 percent to 56.5 percent.
during the conference, experts from ningxia shared the region’s sand control and desertification prevention technologies and the models it has built, such as grass grid sand fixation, the "five-in-one" railway sand control and desertification prevention, and aerial seeding afforestation, presenting a "green business card" for china-oman cooperation in sand control and desertification prevention.
"over the years, we have implemented multiple forestry ecological aid projects. by fully utilizing the resource advantages in sandy areas, we have vigorously developed seven dominant industries, including facility agriculture, ecological economic forestry, and fruit industries, increasing local incomes and promoting local economic development," said li huaizhu, senior forestry engineer from the ningxia forestry survey and planning institute. "in the next step, we will consolidate the existing achievements in desert control, continue to cultivate and develop sandy industries, control and prevent land desertification at the source, and contribute ningxia's strength to global ecological governance."
