china and the united arab emirates' cooperation in renewable energy is not only longstanding and large-scale, but has also been continuously improving in recent years, making breakthroughs and becoming highly significance.
light of the desert
the desert regions within the uae are vast and have abundant year-round sunlight. the rich solar energy resources make photovoltaic power generation an ideal clean energy alternative in the uae.
in an area 45 kilometers south from the center of abu dhabi, the capital of the uae, there is the al dhafra pv2 photovoltaic power station constructed by china machinery engineering corporation (cmec). it is currently the world's largest single-unit photovoltaic power station and a significant green energy project energy under the joint construction of the belt and road initiative (bri).
cmec has overcome challenges such as short construction periods, large scale and harsh natural environments at the site. it has employed cutting-edge photovoltaic technology and equipment, ensuring maximum power generation efficiency and realizing remote-controlled automatic cleaning methods.
after a year of operation, the electricity generated by the station reduced carbon emissions by over 2.4 million tons annually and the station has provided around 5,000 job opportunities for the local community.
wind power project
in october 2023, the uae wind power demonstration project, constructed by power china, was put into operation in abu dhabi, achieving grid-connected power generation.
the team of power china overcame challenges such as the remote locations, high winds and waves, high temperatures and humidity and refined transport plans to ensure the safe delivery of wind turbines to the construction site. now that the project has become operational, it can provide electricity to more than 23,000 households in the uae and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 120,000 tons annually.
this milestone project is the first inclusion of utility-scale wind power in the uae's energy mix.
